Field updates for July 2022

Unlike last year's extreme drought conditions, it looks like we could be seeing a bumper crop this year. As the world becomes aware of the global food crises we are entering, we can be very grateful for these conditions. The world will need it:

Right now, 10% of the world goes to bed hungry. Of those, around 50 million people are at crisis levels of hunger, teetering on the edge of famine. That’s up from 27 million in 2019 before the pandemic began.

The conflict in Ukraine is having a direct impact on global food supplies, with ports being closed and goods unable to leave the country. Ukraine is a major food producer, particularly for sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. Ukraine exports goods like wheat, maize (corn), barley and sunflower oil. This means food prices are rising around the world.

Here are updates from some of the Grow Hope fields across the province.

Siebert Farm Update

The lentils as of July 6 are as good as we could ask for! The surface moisture was ideal for seeding. Since then, we’ve had very limited rains catching only little showers but on July 4, we received a beautiful ¾ inch of rain! Lentils are starting to flower very nice and soon pods will be showing up!

Quiring Farm Update

Seeding went well! We had sufficient moisture. The rain in May helped get the wheat going. Things are progressing well. There’s not a lot of sub-soil moisture but, Lord willing, we should be able to finish with a good crop.

Hergott Farm Update

Our Canola is looking really good and beginning to flower! It’s a beautiful crop.
